Pediatric Dental CarePediatric dentistry or paedodontics is a cross-sectional specialization that deals with children’s dentistry from infancy through adolescence. It is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry represents this specialization and serves as care provider for millions of infants, children and adolescents promoting optimal oral health through various programs and guidelines. It also plays an important part in parenting advising and teaches parents how they should follow the correct hygiene a child needs. Surgeon General stated in 2000 that the most common disorder among children are dental caries.In pediatric dental care, dentists are very important. To choose a good pediatric dentist as a parent may be a difficult job to do. He or she should be a very friendly, communicative and kind person and it is very important that the child would feel comfortable with the doctor. Every pediatric dentist should be aware of the special attention to children’s dental care they need and he has to be a good psychologist. Also, he has to be very patient and a good teacher as for in many cases, a dentist will have to teach children all the healthy habits of keeping their teeth clean. It is very important for the parents to have at least few necessities in mind about pediatric dental care such as: proper cleaning, regular dental visits, dental flossing, mouth washing and a regular fluoride dental treatment. All these actions prevent, in most cases, many problems that the child may have at adolescence or later in his life. It is also very important that the first visit to a pediatric dentist should be around age one in order to establish a proper oral hygiene and for the child to get used to the need of seeing a dentist regularly. |
