New Legislation for Children's Oral HealthIn the month of February and in honor of Children’s Dental Health month President Obama signed new legislation into the Children’s Health Insurance Program concerning the dental health of the eligible children. In fact this legislation comes as a result of a tragic end to a small boy’s life. A twelve year old Maryland boy saw the end of his life as a result of dental health issues, to be more specific he died as a result of an infection that had taken over a decayed tooth. The bacteria from the infection of the decayed tooth worked its way to the twelve year old boys’ brain resulting in his death. This is sad but it could have ultimately been prevented if this legislation was enacted beforehand. Dental health is important for all children; even the ones whose families have not been able to afford private dental insurance. This dental coverage legislation that President Obama has put into action allows each and every child that is eligible for the CHIP program a secure and constant ability to obtain and use the dental coverage that is available through the government. This dental coverage not only covers the actual dental visits for the covered children but it also includes various forms of education for oral health. Not only will this program educate the child about what it means to have good oral hygiene but it will also educate the parents on how to take care of a child’s teeth. Teeth are important and need to be taken care of even before they pop through a baby’s tiny little gum. Now, each and every child that may have otherwise not been able to afford or obtain dental insurance coverage the ability to be educated and prepared to take care of their teeth and the rest of their mouths for the remainder of their lives. |
